Manipuri textiles are renowned for their unique craftsmanship and cultural significance. Let’s explore the fascinating world of Manipuri fabrics:

  1. Moiraingphee:

    • Moiraingphee is a special fabric from Manipur.
    • It is woven on a loin-loom, a type of back-strap loom commonly used by hill people.
    • The warp (lengthwise threads) is prepared and fastened at one end, while the other end is tied to the weaver’s waist.
    • Weaving is primarily done by women for personal use, while organized commercial weaving is carried out by men.
    • Ningthou phee and akoibi feature snake motifs and are worn by royalty. Gun salutes were fired in honor when weaving the ningthou phee.
    • The angami naga is a black shawl with bold embroidered animal motifs, given to brave warriors by royalty.
    • Phaneks are women’s lungis, and the morang phee is the traditional Manipuri sari with a temple border.
  2. Lasingphee:

    • Lasingphee is a quilted cotton material used for warmth during Manipur’s winters (as wool is not available).
    • Bold colors and geometrical patterns are common in Manipuri textiles.
    • Natural dyes are used: wild indigo for black or dark blue, bark for red, and jungle tree barks for green, yellow, and orange.
  3. Moirangphi Chaddar:

    • Morangfi saris, woven in white or soft colors, carry the mandir shikhara (temple top) design on the border with dotted patterns on the body.
    • Legend has it that the Goddess Morangfi herself created this pattern.
  4. Mulberry Silk Worm:

    • Manipur is believed to be the original home of the mulberry silk worm, which later spread to China.
  5. Cultural Significance:

    • Weaving in Manipur is associated with religion, romance, and tradition.
    • Each design has a legend connected to special functions, dances, and ceremonies.
  6. Colorful and Vibrant:

    • Manipuri textiles feature bold colors, intricate motifs, and a rich cultural heritage.

Remember, Manipuri fabrics are not just textiles; they carry stories, rituals, and the essence of a vibrant community. 🌟🌿
